In a scorched, post-nuclear America of 2024, 18-year-old Vic survives by scavenging the wasteland with his telepathic dog Blood, who guides him to food and women in exchange for companionship. Their cynical partnership unravels when Quilla June, a young woman, briefly joins them and entices Vic into the underground society of “Downunder,” a bizarre biosphere masquerading as the idyllic mid-20th-century United States. Blood’s warnings go unheeded as Vic pursues carnal pleasures, only to discover that the city’s utopian sheen hides sinister reproductive practices. Torn between loyalty to his dog and his own desires, Vic must confront the brutal realities of both surface and subterranean worlds.

- The dog “Blood” was played by a canine named Tiger; scenes of him limping were created using a rubber band on his paw.
- Based on Harlan Ellison’s 1969 novella; Ellison later criticized the film’s final line as a departure from his original ending.
