Synopsis:

In the Florida Keys, two rival fishing families—the Greek-American Petrakises and the local Riley clan—vie for control of the lucrative sponge beds lying just beyond the 12-mile territorial limit. Tony Petrakis, fresh from college, challenges local prejudice when he falls for Gwyn Riley, daughter of the Riley boat captain. As both families race to harvest sponges before the season closes, storms at sea and a deadly shark attack raise the stakes. Amid fierce competition, Tony and Gwyn’s forbidden romance forces the elders to confront their mistrust, leading to a climactic diving contest that determines who gains the rights—and teaches both clans the value of cooperation and respect.

Trivia:

  • Filmed in genuine two-strip Technicolor and on-location in the Florida Keys, it was among the first widescreen Cinemascope adventures to showcase underwater sponge-diving sequences.
  • Director Robert D. Webb collaborated with real sponge divers and used authentic diving gear, lending realism to the underwater scenes.
  • The film’s theme of cultural rivalry and cross-cultural romance mirrored postwar America’s growing interest in immigrant stories.
  • Although released by 20th Century Fox, its production negatives were later lost, making original Technicolor restorations rare and highly prized by archivists.
