Synopsis:
After a nuclear weapons test in the Nevada desert, a downed pilot emerges from the blast site mutated into a mindless, lumbering giant. Driven by hunger and pain, the mutant staggers toward Los Angeles, pursued by a small research team led by Dr. John Morton. Along the way, the creature strips the clothes from unwitting motorists and demolishes infrastructure in its path. In a poignant coda, the pilot’s human consciousness briefly resurfaces as he approaches his former fiancée, Ginny Reed, before authorities ambush and kill him—tragically illustrating humanity’s own destructive power.
Trivia:
- Tor Johnson, a Swedish wrestler-turned-actor known for his roles in Ed Wood films, delivers one of his most iconic performances as the mute mutant.
- Director Coleman Francis reused the same barren desert location and cast members in two subsequent low-budget features, creating an unofficial “desert trilogy.”
- The film’s minimal dialogue and static camerawork have made it a cult favorite among fans of “so-bad-it’s-good” cinema.
- The mutant’s lumbering walk and anguished groans were achieved by having Johnson stagger with weighted boots and a thin, ill-fitting costume.
- Entered the public domain due to a failure to renew its U.S. copyright, leading to frequent television broadcasts and inclusion in budget horror compilations.
