Scandalous for it’s time, “The Outlaw” directed by Howard Hughes, is the story of Billy the Kid, Doc Holiday, and Pat Garrett. The supporting cast includes Jane Russell, Jack Buetel, Thomas Mitchell, and Walter Huston. Hughes also produced the film, while Howard Hawks served as an uncredited co-director. The film is notable as Russell’s breakthrough role, turning the young actress into a sex symbol and a Hollywood icon.
When it emerged that The Outlaw had fallen into the public domain in 1971 for lack of renewal, the case was quickly settled, with Classic Film Museum agreeing to stop any distribution of the two copyrighted titles, and Hughes withdrawing its claim on The Outlaw.
